Holter Monitoring
What is Holter Monitoring?
Holter monitoring is a 24-48 hour continuous heart monitoring test that records your heart’s rhythm and activity over an extended period. It's especially useful for diagnosing irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias) and assessing how your heart responds during daily activities, sleep, and rest.
What does the test involve?
During the test, small electrodes are attached to your chest to monitor your heart's electrical activity. These are connected to a small device that you wear on a strap or belt around your waist. You’ll go about your normal daily activities (excluding water activities) while the device records your heart’s electrical signals. The test lasts 24-48 hours, and you’ll be asked to keep a diary of any symptoms or activities you experience during this period.
What can Holter Monitoring help with?
Holter monitoring can help diagnose and evaluate:
Irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias)
Chest pain or unexplained shortness of breath
Heart palpitations or feelings of dizziness
Heart failure or monitoring how well a treatment is working
By continuously tracking your heart's electrical activity, we can spot irregularities that may not show up in a short, standard ECG.
How to Prepare for Your Test
✅ Avoid lotions, oils, or creams on your chest before the test, as they may interfere with the electrode attachment
✅ Wear loose, comfortable clothing
✅ You’ll be instructed to continue your normal routine, but avoid water-based activities (such as showers or swimming) during the monitoring period
Understand Your Heart Health
If you experience unexplained heart symptoms, such as irregular heartbeats, palpitations, or shortness of breath, Holter monitoring gives us valuable insights into your heart’s rhythm over an extended period.
